Kentucky Horse Park Campground Undergoing $5 Million Renovation to Enhance Visitor Experience
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 29, 2026) – The Kentucky Horse Park Campground is undergoing $5 million in renovations to improve campsites, recreation areas and visitor amenities. The renovation project is funded through House Bill 1, which passed during the 2024 legislative session, and will address long-standing maintenance challenges and deliver an elevated recreational experience for camping families and visitors.
“Since opening in 1978, the Kentucky Horse Park Campground has welcomed generations of campers and equine enthusiasts,” said Kentucky Horse Park President Lee Carter. “As modern recreational vehicles and equipment have grown, these improvements will ensure our facilities meet current guest expectations while offering improved amenities for campers to enjoy year-round.”
Construction began with preliminary site preparations and facility demolitions, kickstarting a transformation that will revamp both individual campsites and recreational spaces for campers.
Key highlights of the campground renovation project include:
- New Swimming Pool & Splash Pad Construction: Demolition of the existing pool facility and construction of a new swimming pool and splash pad complex located on the former basketball and sand volleyball court footprint.
- Sports and Entertainment Hub: Construction of a centralized recreational area featuring a newly installed 18-hole mini-golf course, playground, basketball and sand volleyball courts.
- Entertainment Pavilion: Construction of a new event and gathering covered pavilion in the primitive camping section.
- Campsite Pad Resurfacing: Milling and paving existing campsite pads to ensure smooth, level surfaces across all sites.
- Expanded Site Aprons: Widening entry and exit aprons at each campsite to improve maneuverability and prevent mud and grass wear.
- Campsite Patio Area: Constructing dedicated gravel patio spaces beside each site pad for fire pits and picnic tables.
Construction will progress in phases, with completion expected in fall 2027. Site reservations will remain open as scheduled around active work zones.
